IN PURSUIT OF...

Jacob Frost is a Detroit-born director whose work carries the influence of Midwest grit and understated storytelling. Starting his career in Chicago, he developed a foundation in commercials and documentary filmmaking, focusing on stories that feel authentic and raw. Informed by a background in music and an editor at heart, Jacob’s approach prioritizes rhythm, atmosphere, and performance, creating films that balance cinematic craft with real-world texture. His sensitivity to pacing and tone allows performances and environments to unfold naturally, giving his work a grounded emotional weight. Jacob now directs commercial campaigns coast to coast, collaborating with brands and agencies to create films that feel both cinematic and human. Whether working on large-scale productions or intimate documentary-driven pieces, his process remains rooted in observation, authenticity, and a hands-on creative approach shaped by the work ethic and perspective of the Midwest.

Prompts

Getting the perfect performance on the first take is great, but working for it is far more rewarding. I’ll never forget shaping an emotional beat with a father character on a tech commercial. I needed the most subtle shift in emotion on his face, and on take eight, we finally found it.

I’d probably be a prop fabricator. I grew up in awe of my dad’s workbench, and his tools were an early resource that supported my filmmaking. I still enjoy building my own props for projects and hope to eventually get deeper into the craft.

Knives Out is easily my most rewatched film. It manages to take itself both seriously and unseriously at the same time. And Nathan Johnson’s score has made it into my Spotify Wrapped every year since its release.

Ford Motor Company would be a dream collaboration. My dad worked there for 32 years, so Ford was a big part of my upbringing. To me, the brand represents Midwest grit and pride in building things that last.

As someone who started in the grip department, I have a massive appreciation for how little gear I need to be a director.

The moment my family got locked out of our RV on the final leg of a two-month road trip across the U.S.
